Motivation vs Routine: How to Keep Moving When You Don’t Feel Like It

It's ok to take it slow
It's ok to take it slow

We’ve all been there.

You know movement will help.

You want to feel stronger, more mobile, more “you”…

But when the moment comes, your brain says:

“Not today. Maybe tomorrow.”

Whether it’s cold weather, a long day, or just low energy, sometimes motivation is nowhere to be found.

That’s where routine steps in.

💭 Motivation is Fleeting… Routine is Reliable

Motivation is lovely when it shows up — but it’s a bit like the weather.

Some days it’s bright and energised, others… grey and “meh.”

Routine, on the other hand, doesn’t ask how you’re feeling.

It’s just something you do. Like brushing your teeth or putting the kettle on.

🧘‍♀️ Why Routine Wins in the Long Run

You don’t have to “feel like it” — you just do it.

It becomes part of your rhythm.

It removes the decision fatigue.

No back-and-forth with yourself. It’s Pilates day — done.

Your body starts to expect it — and even crave it.

The more consistent you are, the more your body says, “Ahhh, this is the good stuff.”

You make progress without even thinking about it.

Suddenly you’re moving better, standing taller, and realising this works.

How to Build a Pilates Routine (Without Relying on Motivation)

1. Pick a Class Time (and Protect It)

Whether it’s Tuesday morning or Thursday evening, set a time that works with your life — and treat it like a non-negotiable appointment with yourself.

2. Lower the Bar on “Perfect”

Didn’t sleep well? Feeling sluggish? That’s okay.

You don’t need to give 100% every time.

Just showing up is a win — even if you only do a few stretches and breathe.

3. Make it Easy to Start

Have your mat ready. Keep your workout clothes where you can see them.

Remove as many barriers as possible.

4. Remember Your “Why”

Write it down, say it out loud, put it on a post-it.

“I do Pilates so I can move without pain.”

“I do this for future me.”

“I do this because I feel better after.”

🤍 Final Thoughts: Be Kind, Not Rigid

This isn’t about forcing yourself to grind through every session.

It’s about building a relationship with movement that feels sustainable — even when life is a bit much.

Some days, you’ll smash it.

Some days, you’ll just show up and breathe.

Both are wins.
